Alternative Teacher Certification in Instrumental & Vocal Music

The Alternative Teacher Certification in Instrumental or Vocal Music is designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree in music and want to be certified to teach instrumental or vocal music K-12. Each
Post-Baccalaureate Certificate-Only program consists of 33 credit-hours and includes 9 hours of residency training. Students enroll in a selection of Loyola’s undergraduate courses and receive Louisiana State Alternative Teacher Certification at the end of the program.

Applicants must:

  • Complete and submit an Application for Admission.
  • Submit two official copies of transcripts from each postsecondary institution attended to confirm completion of a Bachelor’s of Music degree from a regionally accredited university. Transcripts should verify an overall Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 for all undergraduate work and a grade of “C” or above for music coursework.
  • Submit official ETS score reports for ACT or SAT exams.
  • Submit official ETS score reports for the Praxis I Exam and Praxis II in Music Content Area Exam to verify passing exam scores.*
  • Submit a personal statement of 300 words or less to the Coordinator of Music Education describing your reason(s) for pursuing the Post Baccalaureate Alternative Teacher Certification in Instrumental or Vocal Music and your professional goals upon completing the program.

Tuition and certificate criteria

With tuition of $450 per credit hour, the program offers an affordable option for post-graduate individuals with music education career goals. Students who are accepted to the program will take 33 credits of the specific courses they need for the program of interest.  Full time students can complete the certificate in as little as three semesters. Students completing all program requirements will become certified by the Louisiana Department of Education to teach music.

 

*Conditional Admission may be granted for possession of a baccalaureate of music degree from an accredited university, official transcripts that indicat a 2.75 GPA on undergraduate coursework, official ETS score report for the ACT or SAT and Praxis I, with intent to complete/pass the Praxis II Music Content Area Exam.
