Loyola University’s Department of Theatre Arts and Dance Presents the Cult Classic “Little Shop of Horrors”

By Loyola University on Thu, 03/12/2026 - 10:24

The Department of Theatre Arts & Dance (TAD) at Loyola University is pleased to present “Little Shop of Horrors,” a horror-comedy rock musical featuring the world’s most carnivorous plant, from March 19-28, at Marquette Theater, on the Loyola campus.

Monica R. Harris, a Loyola TAD alumna, is making her musical theatre directorial debut with “Little Shop of Horrors.” She is a Black Filipina multidisciplinary actor, theatre artist and occultist born in Luzon, in the Philippines, and raised in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She has lived in the New Orleans area since 2003.

One of the most treasured pieces of American musical theatre, “Little Shop of Horrors” follows a luckless florist shop worker, Seymour, who raises a wise-cracking carnivorous plant – Audrey II – that must feed on human blood.

Seymour delights in the fame and fortune that his ever-growing plant attracts, while trying to show his co-worker Audrey that she is the girl of his dreams. As Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out-of-this-world origins and intent toward world domination, he learns the lesson: “Don’t feed the plants!”

Helen Jaksch, chair of Theatre Arts & Dance at Loyola and a professor of practice in Theatre Arts, said she chose “Little Shop of Horrors” as the spring TAD production because it’s more light-hearted and fun than the left-of-center works “Ghost Quartet” and “Critters” that the department produced in the fall.

“We wanted to do ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ for its humor and heart,” Jaksch said. “It’s a show that delights audiences while giving our students a chance to shine in a playful, imaginative production. Given the state of the world today, we wanted to give people a reason to set down their burdens for a moment.”

Performances will take place March 19-21 at 7:30 p.m., March 22 at 2 p.m., and March 25-28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9 for students with an ID; $16 for senior citizens, and Loyola faculty and staff with an ID; and, $21 for adults.
