Loyola University’s Opera Workshop Presents Opera Scenes: “The Four Seasons,” a Free Concert in Nunemaker Auditorium

The Loyola Opera Workshop is pleased to present Opera Scenes: “The Four Seasons,” a free, piano-accompanied concert that explores Opera, Operetta and Broadway scenes, on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m. in Nunemaker Auditorium, on the Loyola campus.

The concert, which is open to the public, offers music that takes place in all four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, said Carol Rausch, who leads Loyola’s Opera Workshop as its Music Director and Pianist.

Each of the 19 individual pieces is a short section of opera, or “bite-sized chunks” that are three-to-four minutes long and allow for a lot of variety, Rausch said.

“It’s really fun for me, and it’s really fun for the students,” she said, noting that 28 students are participating in Opera Workshop this semester, a considerable increase from past years. “This particular production really allows our students in ‘Op Shop’ to shine.”

The performance begins in Winter and includes selections from “Hansel and Gretel” by Englebert Humperdinck, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance.” Spring features excerpts from Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” and “The Mikado,” also by Gilbert and Sullivan, among others.

Summer will include music from “Damn Yankees” by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, and “Carousel” by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The final season, Fall, will showcase songs from “The Fantasticks” by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, and “The Addams Family” by Andrew Lippa.

Irini Kyriakidou-Hymel, Instructor in Voice at Loyola, is one of the production’s directors, and she is joined by four student directors: graduate students Sophia Lucurto and Samantha Sevin, and undergraduates Eva Daltoso and Emma St. Cyr.
