Grammy-Award Winning Saxophonist Bob Reynolds to headline Loyola University’s 55th Annual Jazz Ensemble Festival

By Loyola University on Fri, 03/07/2025 - 16:10

NEW ORLEANS – High school students from around the state will get a chance to

listen to – and learn from – renowned saxophonist Bob Reynolds when he plays Loyola

University’s 55th Annual Jazz Ensemble Festival on March 15.

The public also is invited to attend Reynolds’s performance, which will take place at

4:30 p.m. in the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, in the Communications/Music

Complex, 6363 St. Charles Ave.

Reynolds, who plays with the internationally known jazz fusion band Snarky Puppy, will

not only perform at the festival but also teach master classes March 14 and 15 from

12:30-1:30 p.m., which are free and open to the public, said Gordon Towell, coordinator

of Jazz Studies at Loyola. Reynolds will play his saxophone during the classes, and

attendees may ask questions, Towell said.

“The festival provides jazz education to younger students, and it’s also a way to show

people what’s going on with jazz at Loyola University,” Towell said. “This is the oldest

educational jazz festival in the city and probably in the South. It’s a feather in Loyola’s

cap.”

More than 20 high school bands are expected to participate in the three-day festival,

which runs from March 13-15, he said.

The festival starts March 13 with celebrated trumpeter and vocalist Gregg Stafford

performing a traditional jazz tribute concert at 7:30 p.m., in honor of Connie and Elaine

Jones. The concert will take place in Nunemaker Auditorium, in the Monroe Science

Complex.

The following day, members of the Loyola jazz faculty will perform a concert at 4:30

p.m. in Roussel Hall that is free and open to the public, though those interested in

attending should RSVP for a seat in advance of the show.

Then, in addition to the master classes with Reynolds, a different high school band will

play every half-hour in Roussel Hall on March 14 and 15, followed by a clinic with

faculty members to hone the pieces on which they are currently working, Towell said.
