Edward McClellan

Edward McClellan is Associate Professor and Division Coordinator of Music Education, and Mary Freeman Wisdom Distinguished Professor of Music at Loyola University New Orleans. His degrees are from Duquesne University (BSME; MME) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (PhD). 

Dr. McClellan has a proven record of successful teaching from the elementary to undergraduate and graduate levels in Louisiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.  McClellan effectively taught instrumental music in the public schools for 17 years as a certified music teacher, successfully fulfilling responsibilities as Director of Bands, Director of Orchestra, Director of Jazz Studies, Elementary Instrumental Music Teacher, Middle School General Music Teacher/Choral Director, and Chairman of Fine Arts (i.e., Supervising Architecture, Art, Music, Drama, and Photography Faculty).  McClellan’s bands and orchestras consistently received “Superior” ratings at district, state, and national adjudication festivals.  At the undergraduate level, Dr. McClellan has taught the psychology of teaching and learning music, prelude to music education, music education in American society, psychology of music, general music education methods, the introduction to teaching instrumental music, teaching residency seminar, marching band techniques, intermediate conducting, advanced conducting; He has supervised field experience, practicum, and teaching residency. At the graduate level, McClellan has taught contemporary issues in music education, music education in sociocultural context, multicultural music education, and psychology of music.

Dr. McClellan maintains an active scholarly agenda, fulfilled via peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and a profile of leadership and advocacy for inclusive and sequential music learning through engagement and creativity.  He has published quantitative and qualitative research in the Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, Music Educators Journal, Official Journal of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and The Instrumentalist.  McClellan has made research presentations at the International Society of Music Education Conference, ISME Music in Schools and Teacher Education Commission, International MayDay Colloquium, International Symposium on the Sociology of Music Education, International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies, National Association for Music Education Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference, Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium, College Music Society National Conference, College Music Society Southern and South Central Regional Conferences, Idaho Music Educators Association Conference, and Louisiana Music Educators Association Conference.

Dr. McClellan is a member of the Editorial Boards for the International Journal of Music Education, Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education, Themes, Opinion, Policy, Innovation, Curriculum, and Strategies journal, and Music Educators Journal.  He is recent Chair of the Perception and Cognition Special Research Interest Group (SRIG) and former Chair of the Social Sciences SRIG of the National Association for Music Education, Facilitator of the School-University Partnerships Area of Strategic Planning and Action (ASPA) of the Society of Music Teacher Education, Coordinator of the 2015 International Symposium on the Sociology of Music Education, Louisiana State Chair of the Society of Music Teacher Education, and Collegiate Division Chair of the Louisiana Music Educators Association (LMEA).

Dr. McClellan’s research interests include research interests include the psychology of teaching and learning music, sociological influences on music education and music teacher identity, and pre-service music teacher development. He has been active as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator in Louisiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. Dr. McClellan continues to be active as a guest lecturer, clinician, and adjudicator at the local, state, national, and international levels.
