Shelter as identity project

A dragonflies shelter is the rainforest, where they reside in lakes and ponds. Because of the destruction of the rainforest, dragonflies are dying due to the loss of their natural habitats. They instead seek out shiny man made objects that resemble water because they are confused, and die.

When I think of home I think of the people who have shaped me into the person I am today. The biggest contribution to my character is my mother, who has always been a positive influence in my life. She was the most loving, kind-spirited, creative woman I’ve ever known. After passing away, she told me that whenever I saw a dragonfly it would be her sending me love.

For my project, I want to explore the relationship between home and shelter with the use of wire and crystals. The crystals serve as a bridge between nature and civilization, acting as both the shelter of the dragonflies as well as the artificial shelter that kills them. Crystals because they find their place both in nature, and in civilization today used as a meditation tool. To them, it’s nearly impossible to know the difference. The wire takes the shape of dragonfly wings, without their bodies, tethered to the crystals. The process of shaping and creating the wire to take the form of wings was a very meditative and repetitive process. We are all hopeless without shelter in times of destruction, and the greatest loss of all is of your home.
