Loyola Alum and Faculty Receive Grammy Nods – and Two Wins

Three members of the Loyola community were honored in February at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, with an alum and a faculty member coming away with awards.

Carter Lang, who graduated in 2013 with a bachelor’s in Music Industry Studies, won a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album for co-writing and producing “SOS” by SZA. He was also nominated for three other awards – Album of the Year for “SOS,” and Song of the Year and Record of the Year, both for “Kill Bill.”

The win was Lang’s first Grammy. In total, Lang has been nominated for nine Grammy awards since 2018 for his production and songwriting work with artists including Post Malone, Lil Nas X and Doja Cat.

Jay Weigel, an adjunct professor in Music Industry Studies who teaches film scoring, also won a Grammy, for Best Regional Roots Music Album, for his work on Live: Orpheum Theater NOLA. Weigel worked to integrate the music of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lost Bayou Ramblers, a Cajun band.

Weigel is a composer, producer, conductor, arranger, orchestrator and contractor for television and film, and recordings and concerts. He has worked in the film and TV industry for 35 years on projects including Girls Trip, Green Book, NCIS: New Orleans and several Tyler Perry films.

A second faculty member also received a nod in the Best Regional Roots Music Album category as a member of the New Orleans Nightcrawlers. Jason Mingledorff, a saxophone player who is an adjunct professor in jazz studies, was nominated for his work on the album, “Too Much To Hold.”

The New Orleans Nightcrawlers won the Grammy in the Regional Roots Album category in 2020.
