Visiting Professional In Residence
Michael Smith, former anchor on ESPN’s “SportCenter,” will serve as Professional in Residence in the School of Mass Communication during fall 2018.
A member of the Loyola class of 2001, Smith was inducted in the School of Mass Communication’s alumni hall of fame, the Den of Distinction, in 2013. Smith was a guest speaker in 2014 at the 37th annual Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition for high school journalists and will be keynote speaker at the Louisiana Journalism Education Association Fall 2018 conference on Thursday, Sept. 27 at Loyola University New Orleans.
Smith, who began his journalism career with “The Maroon,” Loyola’s award-winning student newspaper, covered the NFL from 2001 to 2004 as a reporter for the “Boston Globe.” In 2004 he was hired by ESPN, where he has held various positions – reporter, panelist, podcaster and analyst. He was a member of the 2017 Class of Henry Crown Fellows within the Aspen Global Leadership Network at the Aspen Institute.
