Jamil Sharif: New Orleans Legend and Master Trumpeter

Jamil Sharif: New Orleans Legend and Master Trumpeter

Date:
Monday, March 22, 2021 - 2:30pm

New Orleans trumpeter Jamil Sharif began his musical instruction with George Jansen, the late music professor and trumpet teacher at Loyola University, who taught many of the auspicious students in New Orleans, including Wynton Marsalis and Terence Blanchard. Sharif returns to Loyola (via Zoom) to share his knowledge and inspire the next generation of great musicians in the weekly Trumpet Studio Class.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Jamil has performed at festivals and concert halls throughout the world and recorded with some of the music industry's leading giants. He has appeared in numerous films, plays, and television productions, serving as music coordinator, composer, music producer, as well as an on-screen performer. He has been featured as a soloist with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and appeared on Aaron Neville's Christmas Special, Reading Rainbow. Jamil is the President of Umdah Music, which has produced three critically acclaimed albums, including Portraits of New Orleans (featuring Dr. John), Jamillennium, and Shine (featuring Japanese vocalist Midori Takamura).

He comes from a long line of musicians and educators dating back to as early as the mid-1800s. His father, Umar Sharif, was a veteran trumpeter, having performed as Lead Trumpet with many Broadway musicals as well as Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Jamil’s great-grandfather was the legendary music teacher, who taught many musicians in New Orleans, as well as many of the south's musical legends. Mr. Sharif is a graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) and Southern University where he studied with Alvin Batiste, Roger Dickerson and Edward "Kidd" Jordan.
