Considered one of the most influential Americans in the art world today, Storr has been Senior Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at New York's Museum of Modern Art, a professor at NYU's Institute of Fine Arts and, from 2006 to 2016, Dean of the Yale School of Art.

In 2007 he became the first American ever invited to serve as commissioner for the Venice Biennale. A frequent lecturer, Storr is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Norton Family Foundation Curator Grant, and a Penny McCall Foundation Grant for painting. His most recent book is Intimate Geometries: The Art and Life of Louise Bourgeois (2016).
